On April 28, Local 80 executive members attended the annual National Day of Mourning Candle Lighting Ceremony.  The ceremony is put on by the Saskatoon District Labour Council and candles are lighted in memory of those killed on the job in the last year.  In attendance were His Worship Mayor Don Atchison, NDP Labour Critic Andy Iwanchuk, Police Chief Clive Weighill and representatives from the SDLC and SFL (Saskatcewan Federation of Labour). This year 34 candles were lit in remembrance, and among those was one IAFF member from Prince Albert Local 510 who died of occupational cancer.

The Day of Mourning began in Canada with a House of Commons Proclamation in 1986.  In 1996, it became the International Day of Mourning, and is now recognized by over 70 countries.  In 2009, 34 workers were killed on the job in Saskatchewan, and around the world amost 350,000 workers die each year because of unsafe work.
