On October 14 during a session of city council, President Bruce Siemens and His Worship Mayor Don Atchison presented Erin Thomas with the Budz-Guenter Scholarship.  Erin is the Daughter of Captain Ron Thomas, a Local 80 member for close to thirty years.

Every year the Saskatoon Professional Firefighters Association Local 80 IAFF and the City of Saskatoon award the Budz-Guenter Scholarship to the son or daughter of an active, retired, or deceased member of the Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services.  The recipient receives one year tuition at the University of Saskatchewan or SIAST (Kelsey Campus).

The Scholarship is awarded in memory of Victor Budz and Dennis Guenter who gave their lives on May 31, 1980 at the Queen's Hotel fire, as well as all firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
